More Gold for Boschendal

Boschendal walked away with not one, but TWO Grand d’Or medals at the Michelangelo International Wine & Spirit Awards.

The Michelangelo International Wine & Spirit Awards gives local and foreign wines the opportunity of being judged by a panel of acclaimed wine experts from around the globe. All judges are hand-picked and serve on the panel by invitation only. Wines are judged in accordance with the variety or type (the class) to which it belongs. (an international 100 point system is used.)

Franschhoek Vineyards Semillon dazzles at Old Mutual Trophy Wine Show

Semillon, the white grape known for its alluring fruit profile and complexity of flavour, is not quite as familiar with wine consumers in South Africa as in its native France. Locally it is rather better known as a blending grape with especially Sauvignon Blanc, but a single varietal rendition from Franschhoek Cellar has left the judges spellbound at this year's Old Mutual Trophy Wine Show. The Franschhoek Vineyards Semillon 2014 was crowned as the best example of the cultivar at this year's competition, receiving the Trophy for Best Semillon at the awards ceremony earlier this week.

Over the course of three days, international experts tasted 374 Syrah/Shiraz wines from all over the world. Diversity and quality are the watchwords for the 2016 winners, which comes as no surprise for a grape variety currently enjoying rapid growth.

Harvest Report 2016

2016 harvest particularly challenging,

and yet ...

A dry winter followed by a hot, dry summer: The winter of May to August 2015 in the Cape Winelands was cold enough to ensure proper vine dormancy but it was one of the driest in decades. A hot growing season followed that included one of the hottest Januaries that anybody can remember. There are exceptions, but mostly the dry winter and summer and the unusually hot months impacted on the yieldsfrom the 2016 harvest, which were significantly less than from the year before.
